American Idle’s Best Of 2008: The Unsung Heroes - Luke Menard, Paula Goodspeed, Danny Noriega, Alexis Cohen, James Lewis, Josiah Leming

noriega.jpg

In 2008, American Idle’s unsung heroes were a hodge-podge of things, ranging from the insane to the inimitable force, from the hilarious to the hoity-toity. And the heartbreaking. It was a weird season with so many twists and turns.

Who knows if Luke Menard, for example, really had cancer during the show. It was something he preferred to share with himself and those close to him. What he shared was his music and his heart.

Moving on from that, people like to point fingers at those who may not be as talented. What I would like to say to that is these individuals are America; that’s why the public enjoys watching auditions. It’s sad that Idol has cut back on auditions for season 8, for they were the highlight of my viewing. Not because they were simply poor singers, but because they shared their stories with me. Often heart-rendering, these are the stories that weave us together and make us feel as though we can accomplish anything. I certainly hope they won’t be wiped off the faces of televisions across the country.

And finally, we come to my unsung heroes for 2008. They were selected for a variety of reasons. Some made me laugh; others made me cry and still others had me snorting my drink up my nose (true story!) as I laughed.

5. Luke Menard - He may have only made it to the Top 24, but in my book the fact he performed while essentially fighting the cancer eating away at him is a story nobody should soon forget. Had he been in a different set of circumstances he may have made it to the Top 12.

4. Paula Goodspeed - Even though it’s been weeks I still get goosebumps thinking about how seriously Idol contestants take this show. Proof positive is the late Goodspeed, the girl from Maine who moved to Hollywood to become a star and to be closer to her idol, Paula Abdul. She is also the season 5 auditioner who took her own life in front of Abdul‘s home in late 2008. It’s both a sad and disgusting story, one which will soon be a made-for-TV movie I’m sure. It’s sad because this girl had severe mental illness stemming from repeated sexual abuse she suffered as a child. It’s disgusting because she shouldn’t have been allowed on Idol in the first place, based on her fragile mental condition.

3. Danny Noriega - Noriega (above photo) was one person away from making it to the Top 10, finishing in eleventh place in season 7. His charisma was evident throughout the show as he playfully bantered with Simon and became a cult hero to millions.

2. Alexis Cohen & James Lewis - Ah, where would we be without singers who, truthfully, may not be as talented as somebody like Noriega or Menard? The answer is listening to Cohen and Lewis (singing above), two singers who auditioned in Philadelphia in season 7 and became overnight sensations for simply being themselves. That, I think, is what Idol’s all about and why it generates such astronomical ratings. Say what you will about their singing, but sometimes it’s more than that.

1. Josiah Leming - Can there be any doubt? Leming may have been the most talented musician to have ever played on American Idol and that’s not a stretch. What’s more inspiring is the road Leming has taken, obviously less-traveled and it did make all the difference, as a famous poet once wrote. Living out of his car at the time he auditioned, Leming also had a heavy heart, watching his mother slowly succumb to cancer. But from such pain came a great person, one who fought on even though he was eliminated from season 7 well before his time and told his story to millions more on talk shows like Ellen. People listened and soon Leming received a record deal from Warner Bros. Ironically his record came out before two-thirds of the Idol 7 Top 10 had even been signed to any deal.

Spoiler Alert: Emily Wynne-Hughes Knows Something About Britney - American Idol 8

emily_hughes.jpg

If you thought you had seen everything when it came to American Idol, like Sanjaya, or Antonella Barba, apparently you were mistaken, because you haven’t met Emily Wynne-Hughes. Or, at least you thought you hadn’t. Actually, you have probably seen more of her than you think!

FYI, she was working in the beauty salon where Britney Spears famously shaved off her hair before Spears flipped out and went ballistic on the paparazzi. Ah, now it’s flooding back to you like that rum-and-Coke you weren’t supposed to drink before bed.

For example, Hughes is already a steely-eyed TV veteran, having completed an interview with KABC, in which she explained what Britney wanted at the salon that fateful night. She followed that work up with hamming it up at the Idol 8 Phoenix auditions, in which she stole 16 seconds from everyone else by singing “Barracuda” and gaining attention for her crazy red hair.

Vote For The Worst has unearthed gobs of other interesting information on Hughes, including the fact she plays in a band called Go Betty Go, which just completed their European tour. How that still qualifies her for Idol 8, I haven’t a clue! Doesn’t that make her a professional? Or is she being paid in beer and cigarettes?

Anyway, in her 21 years of existence it looks like Hughes has seen just about everything and so I predict this Idol hoopla will be like a walk in the park for her, since she’s already hobnobbed with stars, headlined on an Idol 8 commercial (video above), and been invited to exclusive Hollywood parties.

So look for Emily Wynne-Hughes to make some sort of difference on American Idol 8, even though it’s too early to tell what kind that might be. Personally she looks a lot like Carly Smithson so it may just be that this has all been done before. Or it’s just that she’s so crazy people won’t ever forget her.

However, if she were to shave her head and use the fact she knows Britney based on that chance encounter at the beauty salon, you never know.

Idle Chitchat - Idol 8 Spoilers, Paula Abdul, Carrie Underwood

Published by bjcrock under Uncategorized Edit This

paulaabdul_boyfriend1.jpg

Ewww…It’s that dreaded word again…spoilers! OMG, is it THAT time already?!? You know what “spoiler” means, if you’re an American Idol fan, anyway. It means cover your eyes if you don’t wanna see what’s being announced next and start singing “la-la-la” at the tops of your lungs if you hear anything. The good news is I’m gonna tell you we’re not even close to knowing who all of the Top 50 contestants are. But they’re starting to surface. There are some names you’ll recognize from last season, since the Idol brass invited all of last year’s Top 50 back, except for those who got record deals already. So look for a feature story on one such “spoiler” tomorrow! -Vote For The Worst

And in other news, it turns out the guy with Paula (above photo) is not only NOT her boyfriend, but he’s also her gay best friend named Jimmy! LOL That’s what happens when you are a media outlet that runs your story without getting the information right! I can’t begin to tell you how many stories (uh, blogs) have to be retracted because somebody wants to scoop everyone else! Look, people…I went to journalism school and I can tell you that in the real world, you would be sued for publishing such garbage. Luckily, Abdul has a sense of humor (or so I’m told) and thinks it’s absolutely hilarious that others think this guy (who is dining at her ex-boyfriend’s restaurant, BTW) is her new man. Wake up, people. - Blog.singersroom.com

And finally, Carrie Underwood is the new “Idol commercial du jour.” (Watch it above.) You knew it would only be a matter of time before FOX started pimping her like nobody has ever been pimped. I have two theories why: First, David Cook won last year and so the chances a guy wins season 8? Um, not good. Second, lots of female Idols are making or will be making the jump to country music, which believe it or not has been the one genre that has been a mainstay for many an Idol gal. And word on the street is Idol brass are paying awfully close attention to females this year, especially those who can sing and write their own songs. A birdee told me so.

Idle Chitchat - Kady Malloy, Bo Bice, Paula Goodspeed

malloy.jpg

Opening the chitchat up on a busy post-Christmas Day weekend, Kady Malloy (remember her? Above photo should refresh your memory) from last season’s Top 24 has a single called “Broken Dreams,” which is available on iTunes and Amazon. Actually released a month ago (November 19 to be exact) the single is nice, but not overpowering, which is unfortunate, considering Malloy has a wonderful voice. Guys know her for other things (trust me, I KNOW what they searched for and it wasn’t her name). If Malloy can get some decent representation she could probably do some damage. - Amazon

Bo Bice has arisen from the dead Idol folklore (he underwent three operations, if you weren‘t aware) and is busy playing gigs, like the Christmas concert on MyTV we featured. But that’s not all he’s doing; he’s preparing to put out another album (hopefully it goes better than the first), a live CD which will be coming in March or April of 2009, and his health is better after all these surgeries to correct a problem he’s had for years. And you’ll see him this season at some point on American Idol 8! So look for some big things in the next year from Bo Bice. - Blogcritics

And finally, we have some Paula Goodspeed news! Sort of. If Goodspeed’s manic behavior causing her to take her own life in front of Paula Abdul’s house wasn’t enough, her fiance Paul MacInnis has taken the madness one step further, claiming he’s keeping her ashes because he promised he’d “never abandon her” and that “she did not like the cold” of her home state of Maine. Well, alrighty then. Kinda weird, but they’re grieving, you know. That does explain two things, however: Why she chose to not return to Maine, which she was planning to do, according to reports. And it explains that psychological disorders are nothing to laugh at, in this well-written story. - Kennebec Journal

David Archuleta At Walt Disney World Xmas Parade - American Idol 7

David Archuleta took some time out of his busy performing schedule to inform viewers about Walt Disney World (we’ll call him an unofficial spokesperson) and the new American Idol Experience at the Florida theme park. Even though it looks like he read the whole thing off of a TelePrompter. LOL

The new “Experience” gives fans an opportunity to see what it’s like to actually be on American Idol, with lots of interactive displays that are basically routine at Disney attractions around the world. The difference is that Idol fans will be able to sing on a stage and pretend they are the star.

The attraction opens on February 12. As for Archuleta’s other upcoming endeavors, he will actually be performing alongside the Osmond 2nd Generation, including David Osmond, who is reportedly a part of Idol 8, on New Year’s Eve.

Archie’s also got his new single out on iTunes called “A Little Too Not Over You,” which came out this past week. And in terms of sales, his self-titled debut album should be going gold anytime now. So for Archuleta, even though Idol 8 is just weeks away, his career is just beginning.

Idle Chitchat - Chikezie, Kellie Pickler, Carly Smithson

kellie-pickler-christmas.jpg

Chikezie is wrapping up his not-so-commercially-successful Idol Holiday Tour in Waukegan, Ill. But the real news coming from the Idol 7 Top 10-er is that he may be finally putting out an album! That leaves about one-third of the Top 10, including Carly, Brooke, Jason and Ramiele as those who still haven’e put out an album. He told the audience a deal was in the works with Universal Records, but we heard that all before with Sundance Head in season 6 and nothing came to fruition there. So it’s all wait-and-see with Chikezie, but it would be nice if another Idol from season 7 got a record deal. - Tommy2.net

As all of you already know, Kellie Pickler is not home for Christmas this year. So where is she exactly? Well, instead of being in some snowy city like New York for the holidays, Pickler and a college buddy decided it would be more festive, relaxing (and warm) to be in the Bahamas. First off, I had no idea Pickler went to college…LOL Second, she is single so…how does that saying go? “If you’re ever in the Bahamas…” Well, anyway Pickler’s in the Bahamas. In the picture above, Pick Me is looking every bit the 38 years she is. LOL Just kidding. - Just Jared

Carly Smithson started her blog by saying she’s in Charleston, S.C. with her in-laws for the holidays, but then she dropped a bomb (a name bomb) by announcing she’s writing a song or two with a certain someone from Idol 5. Gee, wonder who that could be? Does the name rhyme with Autry? LOL Anyway, Smithson should have an album coming out in 2009 and there will no doubt be more to come from the Irish rocker. - Carly Smithson MySpace

Happy Holidays From LaKisha Jones and Mandisa - American Idol

One of the better versions of “The First Noel” I’ve heard in some time, LaKisha Jones is probably of the most talented Idols ever. Growing up in the hardscrabble town of Flint, Michigan made famous in Michael Moore’s movie “Roger & Me,” it’s only natural that Jones would possess such a soulful voice, having come from such difficult circumstances. She hasn’t let this hold her back, however.

Sometimes, but not often, American Idol has had the potential to find hidden gems like LaKisha who just bowl over the competition. It’s rather strange that Jones hasn’t had as much commercial success. But she has had tremendous success from a personal perspective, which is why I’m proud to be able to tell you about her wonderful performance above.

Another shining star who hasn’t been in the spotlight as often, but has a wealth of ability is Mandisa, whose roots are deeply religious and spiritual. A tad different voice than Jones, Mandisa’s more understated in terms of her voice, but the quality is unmistakable.

Being shown here on Huckabee on FOX News singing “Little Drummer Boy,” Mandisa has had a very successful career in Christian contemporary music since her Idol days, having been nominated for several Dove Awards, along with Chris Sligh, among other notables.

I think the one thing you can say about both singers is they are the genuine article, the real deal in an era of over-produced, over-hyped talent whose aim is to sell records and do mandatory public appearances. And it’s nice to able to bring them to you on this Christmas Day.

Idle Chitchat - Ryan Seacrest, Paris Bennett, Kelly Clarkson

What’s this I hear about Ryan Seacrest going out to dinner with none other than Paris Hilton? Well, it turns out the story is true and they were eating at STK in West Hollywood with a friend of Hilton’s named Brittany Flickinger. Then they got their groove on at Hyde nightclub following a possibly romantic dinner, but I doubt the romantic part. Even so, Seacrest does look content palling around with Hilton, doesn’t he? Hmm…is something going on here? - Idol Stalker

In amongst the sea of black suited choral performers is Paris Bennett, or “Princess P,” in red. It’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep from Paris but it’s never too late to get your career going, I suppose. Singing the spiritual “Oh Happy Day,” Paris had the San Diego Mens’ Chorus and the audience jumpin’ at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego. (Video above.) - Rickey

And finally, as if there weren’t enough singles coming out from Idols (just kidding, peeps) Kelly Clarkson has thrown her vocal cords to be part of the onslaught. The first American Idol will have a new single debuting January 19, called “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Well, our lives would suck without hearing more from these Idols, so happy holidays to all and may your season be merry and bright. -Billboard

David Cook Gives More Than A Gift In His Hometown - American Idol 7 - David Cook

David Cook has finally finished his “Jingle” tour (as has his cohort David Archuleta) and so Cook is now back in his hometown of Kansas City. When it would be so easy to kick back from a busy tour and just chill out with friends Cook has instead decided it’s more important to give some positive words of encouragement to kids who need it.

He and Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez were at Kansas City’s Mercy Hospital laughing with terminally ill children who may not see another Christmas. I have included the video from this visit because it’s not always about the singing; it’s about something more than that, particularly at this time of year when millions are being laid off and others are just thankful to be here.

Seeing the kids with masks over their faces brought everything into perspective. Having suffered through watching two very close family members succumb to cancer in the same week (and the same hospital) I know how hard it is to stay positive when everything looks so unbelievably bleak.

I think this video, above all others, is a testament to Cook’s (and Gonzalez’) character and resolve as human beings who simply wish to do the right thing for others. Not once did I hear anything about singing, or football; all I heard were honest questions and answers (and laughs) and that’s the way it should be.

The other nice thing about Cook’s break is he will be able to spend it with his family. Rightly so, he considers himself fortunate (as you know, Jordin Sparks isn’t gonna be home this Xmas) and so to know he’s doing something great and has the support of many is a heartening feeling. I think that honesty and integrity has something to do with Cook’s brisk record sales, as well.

As for Gonzalez, a word about him. In an era where it’s easy for NFL players to find the bigger, better deal Gonzalez has stayed with the Chiefs throughout his illustrious career. While he’s never won a Super Bowl, I do believe in his mind he’s won something greater than that. I think we can all learn from these kind gestures.

Idle Chitchat - Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Simon Cowell

simon-cowell-dickhead.jpg

Since Clay Aiken has come out of the closet, and in being the first major American Idol star to do so, he has been on a crazy ride. He also celebrated the birth of his son Parker and now will prepare for a much-needed break from his role as Sir Robin in the Broadway show Spamalot. He’ll get that break come January 4 and plans to start singing again, just as soon as he’s done spending some quality time with his baby boy. - People

Ruben Studdard hasn’t been as busy as Clay Aiken, mind you, but he’s still been doing something. In a recent look back with other Hollywood stars Ruben talks about how he got straight A’s…until he felt like opening up! In this case, he opened up his vocal cords and started using that bulbiferous voice until he almost lost the opportunity to have a Christmas!! Speaking out in class got him an F grade in conduct. When his mom found out, he said she told him he wouldn’t get a Christmas!! In the end though, as Big Rube pouted outside of their home, someone (probably Santa) put his gifts back in plain sight. His mother only meant to teach Ruben a lesson. - Star-Telegram

We all knew Simon Cowell was a jerk, but apparently he has taken that title a step further. Now he and his crack legal team have sent a notice ordering The Inquisitr, a blog, to take down the photo they published. (The incriminating (and hilarious) photo is above)). The bullies even carbon copied the photo to Cowell. So in the span of two weeks Cowell has (drum roll please) broken up with his girlfriend, had some English schoolkids name him more important than God and set a tracking device under his car. All I have to say, in closing, is that Cowell needs to lighten up! Then maybe people would lay off his sorry ass. - The Inquisitr
